Mani Ratnam’s Epic Adaptation of Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two to Make a Splash in Theatres

Mani Ratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two is set to make a splash on April 28. The film is based on the novel series of Kalki Krishnamurthy and is a must-watch for Indian movie lovers.

The first part of the movie was a massive hit and broke several records. It also made Mani Ratnam one of the highest-grossing directors in Tamil cinema.


The cult historical novel Ponniyin Selvan, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, is a complex melodrama with an ensemble of characters and numerous plot twists. Mani Ratnam has done a remarkable job in bringing the layered story to life, creating a rich canvas with larger-than-life characters.

The main character of the story is Vanthiyathevan, a prince from the Vana clan who serves the Cholas. He is a friend of Aditha Karikalan and sends him from Kanchi with messages to Kundavai and Sundara Chola.

He also meets Azhwarkadiyan, a Chola spy who works for the kingdom’s prime minister. He also meets boatwoman Poonkuzhali, who helps him on his travels.

Then, there is Periya Pazhuvettarayar, the lord treasurer and a strong warrior with 64 scars on his body. His wife Nandini is also a conspirator who is aiming to destroy the Chola dynasty.


Part two of Mani Ratnam’s epic adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s popular novel, Ponniyin Selvan is a historical melodrama that brings a battle for the throne to life. It’s a tale of war and power play that mirrors contemporary Indian politics.

It is set in 900 AD, and is centered on a succession battle in the Chola kingdom. There are a number of rivals trying to dethrone the Chola emperor Sundara Chola.

The plot is complicated. It features a series of gruesome wars and seedy conspiracies.

But what makes this movie work are the performances by the cast. Trisha, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Vikram, Jayam Ravi and Parthiban deliver stellar performances that keep you engaged through out the movie.

But, it is Nandhini who steals the show with her seductive charm and vindictiveness. Her character is one of the reasons you’re drawn to her from the beginning.


The first part of Ponniyin Selvan hit the theatres on September 30, and it went on to become a blockbuster. The film has a star-studded cast, and is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical fiction of the same name.

It’s a story of the Chola dynasty and the plight of Arulmozhi Varman, who was saved from drowning in the river Kaveri at the age of five. This incident has a deep meaning in the movie.

Mani Ratnam has adapted the story into a film, and it is co-written with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Music has been composed by AR Rahman, and the film is expected to hit the theaters seven months after the release of Part 1. Release Date

After creating a huge box office record with its first part, the makers of Ponniyin Selvan have announced that the second part of the movie will be released on April 28. This has been confirmed by one of the banners behind the film – Madras Talkies – on Twitter.

The first part of the film was released in September 2022 and was received positively by the audience. It broke numerous box office records and earned a total of over 200 crores in India alone.

The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s renowned ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ novel series and was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film features an ensemble cast including Sobhita Dhulipala, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, and Prakash Raj among others. It also features music by AR Rahman.
